Summer 2007 Reading List

It's funny to see how my writing and my opinions on some of these have changed or completely disappeared in only 3 years!

"Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs," Chuck Klosterman
- Really good and comical analysis of pop culture. My favorite sections are the ones about John Cusack and the Guns n' Roses tribute band. I guarantee you'll laugh within the first two pages.

"The Lovely Bones"
- Novel of a girl's life in heaven as she guides her family/friends through her death. Kind of weird - pleasant and morbid while being read, but when you've finishing and you're reflecting, it seems much better than just pleasant.
"Lucky"
- Moving memoir of the author's rape and how her life changes and moves afterward.
[ both by Alice Sebold ]

"The Newyorkers," Cathleen Schine
- Cute story about a NYC neighborhood & how dogs bring the people who live in it together. The best way to describe this novel: if it were a movie, it'd be a romantic comedy.

"Blood Orange," Drusilla Campbell
- A new favorite! A story of a girl's kidnapping and how those around her are changed. It's mostly about the mother and what she may have done to cause her daughter's disappearance. It's really great for the kind of novel it is.

"When We Were Gods," Colin Falconer
- It's really long [462 pgs] and the physical and measureable length of around two books, but if you like Cleopatra/ancient Egypt, this is fucking outstanding.

"Everyone Worth Knowing," Lauren Weisberger
- So cute. Basically a just a 'fun' read. She wrote “Devil Wears Prada,” and it's written in the exact same formula, but who cares when you knew you were reading it for fun to begin with.

"The Great Santini," Pat Conroy
- Anything by Pat is fantastic but might be hard to stomach as reality if you don't understand and/or know a Marine. You're going to hate the main character, but by the end of the book you'll realize that at some point you started love him without even realizing it.

"Tuesdays with Morrie," Mitch Albom
- One of the only books I've ever read that actually made me reassess my life. READ IT! It only took 3 hours.

"1,000 Rolling Stones Covers," Various Authors
- Mainly covers, but has good excerpts from the magazine articles, and quotes from artists featured on the covers.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," JK Rowling
- Read 759 pages in 13 hours. Needless to say, you can't put it down. It's wonderful & I cried the whole time. It was what was expected but not at all what was expected. I have to admit I feel empty now that there isn't anymore Harry to read.

"Led Zeppelin IV," Barney Hoskyns
- Short and sweet, but obviously if you don't care about Led Zeppelin, it's not for you. But if you don't like Led Zeppelin, you should probably rethink your life.

"The Day My Mother Left," James Prosek
- Another quick read. Cute, yet moving at the same time. I can't tell if it was written for all age groups or targeting JUST the young reader though.

"Scar Tissue," Anthony Kiedis
- You don't have to love the Chili Peppers to read this since it's about the author/lead singer's life, but it's always a plus since you will need a background with RHCP to know what he's talking about musically. He goes through so much shit and pulls himself out of heroine and cocaine addictions multiple times. Needless to say, it's riveting.
